Although dental implants are a relatively new alternative to crown bridges and dentures, they have already become the gold standard for missing tooth replacement. Thanks to their long-lasting results and 95-98% success rate, dental implants are among our most popular procedures at Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique & Spa.
To achieve the best results from your treatment, read on to discover what you need to know before getting dental implants, then call us at (954) 524-2300 to schedule a complimentary consultation.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are replacements for missing teeth. Every implant has three components: the implant post, abutment, and prosthesis.
- The implant post goes into the jawbone in place of the tooth roots. It’s usually made of titanium, a biocompatible material that fuses with the bone.
- The abutment connects the implant post and the crown, usually made of titanium or a tooth-colored material.
- The prosthesis replicates the part of the tooth above the gum. We customize these to look just like your missing teeth. It can be a single crown, a bridge, or a full arch implant.
What To Expect From the Dental Implant Process
You will first have a consultation with us at Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique & Spa. We’ll take your medical history, order X-rays or 3D imaging, and create your treatment plan.
Some patients require preliminary procedures like tooth extractions or bone grafting. We may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
On the day of the procedure, we’ll use a local anesthetic to ensure a pain-free surgery. We also offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Once you’re comfortable, your dentist will make a tiny cut in your gum to reveal the bone, create space, and insert the implant.
The dental implant requires a few months to fuse with your jawbone properly. Until then, you’ll get a temporary prosthesis. Once fusion is complete, your dentist will place the abutment and your permanent crowns.
You may feel discomfort after the surgery, but it should be manageable with over-the-counter painkillers. Swelling, bruising, and minor bleeding are normal and typically fade within several days.
What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?
Dental implants have many benefits over other tooth replacement options.
Unlike dentures, implants attach to your jaw permanently and won’t slip or fall out. To care for your implants, simply brush and floss twice daily.
More importantly, implants prevent bone loss, a common complication of missing teeth. Neither dentures nor bridges do that.
Dental implants also:
- Support neighboring teeth
- Prevent face shape changes
- Restore bite force
- Improve speech
- Enable you to enjoy your favorite foods
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
The ideal candidates are non-smokers with healthy gums and a jawbone strong enough to hold implants.
However, gum disease and low jawbone density don’t automatically disqualify you. Our experienced dentists at Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique & Spa can perform laser gum therapy and bone grafting to address these issues.
I Am Diabetic. Can I Get Dental Implants?
Uncontrolled diabetes can increase infection risk, slow healing, or prevent implants from fusing with the jawbone. However, having diabetes doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t get this treatment.
Studies show that if your condition is well-managed, there is no increased risk of implant failure or complications. If you are generally healthy and keep your blood sugar in check, you can still be a good candidate for implants, but consult your physician and dentist first.
Can I Exercise After Dental Implant Surgery?
It’s best to avoid exercise immediately after surgery. Give your body time to recover. Even gentle exercise may cause jarring in the treatment area and slow wound healing.
