FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida—Dr. April Patterson, affectionately known as “Dr. Patty,” Cosmetic and Restorative Dentist and native of Boynton Beach, appeared on CBS Miami’s #MiamiProud segment as part of Black History Month. Reporter Marybel Rodriguez interviewed Dr. Patty about her background, unique approach to dentistry and commitment to giving back to the community.
During the interview, Rodriguez explains that Dr. Patty knew as a young girl that she wanted to be a dentist, despite not seeing any dentists that looked like her. The high school salutatorian attended the University of Michigan Dental School, where there were two Black females and five Black people in a class of 100. Still, it was an amazing experience for the mother of two little girls.
An active and engaged member of her community, Dr. Patty is determined to shake things up in the business. “People don’t like going to the dentist,” she says. “My mission is to change that for people.”
One of the most significant ways she has made a difference is with Dr. Patty Miami, her dental office on 54th Street in Little Haiti. “This is where I feel I can make an impact in reference to this community,” she says. Offering cosmetic dentistry and procedures, Dr. Patty has also created jobs and goodwill. “You have the opportunity to relax and wait for your appointment, have a coffee, have a small bite,” she explains. “And the money we make from this café, a portion of it, I plan to give back to the community.”
Dr. Patty’s plans also include opening her rooftop patio to local organizations for events and using her time and talent to train younger dentists. “When you come out of school, and you’re two, three years in, that’s when you need somebody to mentor you, train you, take that time. That’s a huge part of what I plan to be doing here,” she says.
